What is the cloud?

The cloud makes it possible for you to access your data and documents anywhere, from any device, at any time.

Meet the cloud

The cloud isn’t physical, but rather refers to anything that is stored online. It allows you to save and access your content securely across any device—not just the specific one you’re using. When a document is stored “in the cloud,” it means that you’re no longer chained to your hard drive.

Sounds complicated? It’s not. You’re already using it.

Access what you need from anywhere

The cloud is what lets you access all of your important stuff across multiple devices.

Unshackle yourself

You just started your vacation, but in a panic you remember you forgot to send an important document to a client or colleague. You didn’t bring your laptop because you didn’t think you’d need it.

What are you going to do?

Dropbox files are stored remotely on servers for you to access from anywhere, at any time, from any device. That means you can use your phone to snag that document and send it along, allowing you to breathe easy while you do what you’re meant to do on vacation—relax.

It doesn’t matter what system you use

Dropbox is platform agnostic, meaning you can choose whether or not you want to use the Dropbox desktop app, the Dropbox mobile app, or just visit dropbox.com. There’s no wrong way, operating system, or web browser to use Dropbox—the choice is entirely yours.

Desktop app

The downloadable Dropbox desktop app runs on Windows, Mac, or Linux operating systems and gives you access to your Dropbox account directly through a folder on your hard drive.

Using the desktop app means you won't have to manually upload or download files in your Dropbox folder. The app automatically watches your Dropbox folder and keeps your files in sync for you. Any time you save a change to a file and are connected to the internet, that change will sync everywhere you have Dropbox installed. And with Smart Sync, you’re no longer constrained by the size of your hard drive.
